What it does

From the 404 page to the right fix, in a single plugin.

Where the 404 comes from

  • Every visit to a 404 page is assigned one of six sources: internal links, search engines, other sites, crawlers, direct, suspicious scans.
  • Internal links: the visitor clicked a broken link on a page of your site, and the plugin tells you which one.
  • Search engines: Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Ecosia and the others, and also AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity. An old address is still in their results.
  • Other sites: a link from another site or from social media, with the address of the page linking to you. Crawlers: Googlebot, Bingbot and the other robots, by name.
  • Direct: no page sent the visitor (address typed by hand, bookmark, app, email).
  • Suspicious scans: bots looking for weak points (.env, copies of wp-config.php, old scripts, administration tools). They are counted but stay out of the list, because there is nothing to fix.

404 pages

  • The totals for the last 7 or 30 days by source, in boxes that also act as a filter.
  • To fix, With redirect, Ignored and All views, filter by source, search and sorting by visits or last visit.
  • For each address, the visits by source, the first and last visit and the pages, sites and crawlers it comes from.
  • Per-row and bulk actions: redirect to the home page, ignore, delete from the log.

Where the broken link is

  • In the details of an address, the pages of the site that send visitors there, each with the «Edit» link.
  • The plugin looks for the link in content too: posts, pages, menu items, navigation blocks, template parts and reusable blocks.
  • When many pages point to the same address, it warns that the link is probably in the menu, in the header, in the footer or in a sidebar.
  • For a broken link on your own pages the right cure is to fix the link: the plugin tells you so before suggesting a redirect.

Redirect

  • One click to the home page, from the list or for many addresses at once.
  • Or to a page of the site chosen from the list: the redirect follows the page when its address changes.
  • Or to any other address, on the site or on another site.
  • 301 (permanent) or 302 (temporary), with a count of the redirected visits. In the Redirect tab you can add, change, test and delete them.
  • A redirect only applies as long as the address returns 404: if you publish a page at that address, the page wins.

All 404s to the home page

  • One switch sends every 404 page without its own redirect to the home page. It is off by default.
  • Alongside, the warning: Google treats bulk redirects to the home page as 404 pages («soft 404») and does not pass the old page's ranking to the home page.
  • Visits are logged anyway, so you can see which addresses deserve a redirect of their own; suspicious scans stay 404.

Lightweight and private

  • No IP and no user agent stored: only the address, the referring page or site (without the parameters after the ?) and the crawler name.
  • One row per address, not one per visit, and a daily total by source.
  • Addresses that nobody has visited for 90 days (or however many you choose) leave the log on their own; the redirects remain.
  • Visits from the dashboard, when you open an address from the list, don't count.

Page cache

  • With the log on, 404 pages do not end up in the page cache (LiteSpeed Cache, WP Super Cache, WP Rocket and the other plugins that respect DONOTCACHEPAGE), so every visit is seen.
  • When you save a redirect the plugin clears the cached copy of that address in LiteSpeed Cache, WP Rocket and WP Super Cache: the redirect works right away.

Settings

  • Log on or off and retention days.
  • Scan addresses logged too, if you want to see them.
  • Addresses never to log, one per line, such as /favicon.ico; with a trailing asterisk, a whole folder.
  • Clears the log, to start counting again after a big clean-up. The redirects stay.
  • Deleting the plugin removes tables, settings and scheduled cleanup; deactivating it deletes nothing.

Support

  • In the Information tab, «Ask for support» opens the contact form of this site already filled in: the plugin name as the subject and the site data in the message (plugin, WordPress and PHP versions, theme, language).
  • The message is in Italian if the dashboard is in Italian, in English otherwise: all that is left is to describe the problem, and a screenshot can be attached.
  • Nothing is sent until you press Send on the form; the same data can also be copied with a button.

How it is used

From installation to the first 404 fixed, in five steps.

1. Install and activate

The plugin is in the official WordPress.org directory. In the WordPress dashboard go to Plugins → Add new, search for «Lobbit 404 Monitor», press «Install now» and then «Activate»: the «404 Monitor» item appears in the menu, the log starts straight away and updates arrive from the dashboard as with any other plugin.

Alternatively, download the zip from the plugin page on WordPress.org and upload it from Plugins → Add new → Upload plugin. The plugin is written in English and the Italian translation comes from translate.wordpress.org.

2. Start from internal links

In the 404 pages tab, look at the internal links first: they are broken links on your pages. Open the address, read «Where the broken link is» and fix the link on the page shown with «Edit». If the same address comes from many pages, the link is in the menu or in the footer.

3. Redirect the old addresses

For addresses that come from Google, from other sites or from crawlers, choose the page that took the place of the old one and save a 301 redirect: Google moves the address and anyone following the old link finds the right page. The home page is the quick solution, when there is no replacement page.

4. Set aside what you don't need

An address not worth fixing can be ignored: it leaves the To fix view and stays in Ignored. Suspicious scans are only counted; addresses you don't want to record, such as /favicon.ico, go in the Settings.

5. Check back again

Open the tab again now and then: the totals for the last 7 or 30 days tell you whether 404s are falling, and the Redirect tab how many visits each redirect has recovered.

PHP: another domain of the same site counts as an internal link

add_filter( 'lobbit_404_site_hosts', function ( $hosts ) {
	$hosts[] = 'shop.example.com';
	return $hosts;
} );

PHP: if you use another cache, clear the copy of the address when you save a redirect

add_action( 'lobbit_404_purge_url', function ( $url ) {
	// $url is the full address, like https://example.com/old-page
	my_cache_purge_url( $url );
} );

PHP: changing the source of a visit

add_filter( 'lobbit_404_classify', function ( $result, $request ) {
	// The uptime monitor counts as a crawler.
	if ( str_contains( $request['user_agent'], 'UptimeRobot' ) ) {
		$result = array(
			'source' => 'crawler',
			'detail' => 'UptimeRobot',
		);
	}
	return $result;
}, 10, 2 );

The sources are internal, search, external, crawler, direct and scan. The lobbit_404_redirect_saved action fires on every saved redirect, with address, destination and code.

On WordPress.org. The plugin is published in the official WordPress.org directory: you install and update it from the dashboard, for free. Go to the plugin page

What it sees. The plugin sees the 404s that WordPress answers. On many servers a missing file inside wp-content/uploads gets its 404 from the web server, without going through WordPress: those are not logged. The source is read from the Referer header, which some browsers and sites do not send: those visits count as direct.
